Political SystemIntroduction - Electoral RecallApril 2004 A SYMPOSION: ELECTORAL RECALL is the process by which voters may petition to remove an elected official from his/her position. Recall has been adopted in United States and in British Columbia, the only province in Canada to grant its voters the power to remove a member of Provincial Parliament. A recall vote would require a majority to unseat the erring MP until next elections. Recall is not about political conduct. It is not about political parties; it should be considered a NON-PARTISAN motion. Recall is about special interest liberalism and corruption. Regardless of the electoral system we have at present or proportional representation we may have in the future, or even establishing a charter for the city, is there any assurance that corruption or conflict of interest will not occur? Is there legal recourse for removal from office or a limit on the right to take office? Are there barriers to judicial role? Do we pass laws that never come to force and the public has no access to?
